Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as caustic soda or lye, is a strong alkaline (basic) chemical. It is a white, odorless solid that readily dissolves in water, producing heat.
Membrane cell technology has the dominant share of caustic soda production across over the world. Compared with the two other processes, membrane cell process has the lowest energy consumption per ton. 80% of China’s caustic soda capacity was membrane cell process. North America has lagged in conversion from diaphragm cell process to membrane cell process by Europe having 80% of European caustic soda capacity.
